Not that others of us hadn't thought of it, but Dwain was the one that bought the sur- plus Pennsylvania Railroad last car in a train. Back in 1988 the office phone rang and I was told there's a caboose going down the street in Chestnut. I knew it was to arrive that week - Dwain had just fin- ished the railroad track it was to be set on. I got to Dwaln's, took photos, and got a story for the paper. Dwain's plan for the caboose was to restore it to like new appear- ance and he did. Over the years, the caboose again weathered, but it's about to have a second resto- ration. And for the next many years it was a conversation piece and school kids toured it when they came to see Dwain's large base- ment model railroad empire. I was glad to see that not only the caboose but also one of the oldest model railroads owned by one individual, was to be pre- served. The model railroad began l just before Dwaln left for ser- vice in WWII. After the war, he dove into the model railroad and as long as his health allowed he worked on it. In 1998-1999 the hobby magazine Model Railroader started looking for information on the oldest model railroad in the country. I had done a story on Dwain's for a Christmas issue. Not knowing what would happen, I submitted the story. I received a call from the magazine. They would do Dwain's story. The editor was impressed with how long the model railroad had existed. Not telling Dwain about it, I knew what month it would be published. Dwain had been a subscriber of Model Railroader since about the time the maga- zine started publication in the 30s so I knew he would read it without me saying anything. I'll remember for the some time the day Dwain called me and I asked, "What's up Dwain'? He replied, "You know very well what's up thanks Mike. I'm off to buy extra copies." I still have that copy of Model Railroader, and I can lay my hands on it, given time. Dwain, for some time, kept it handy, showing it to dedicated fellow model railroaders. The model railroad was called one of the oldest privately owned model railroads in the country. The caboose and model rail- road will be displayed at the Monticello Railway Museum. The caboose will be restored this year. Built in December 1917, the museum will celebrate its 100~ birthday late this year. Thanks to Courier Editor Jean Ann Miller for the caboose photo. I arrived after it had left. By the way, "Keystone"? Pennsylvania Railroad used a keystone logo because Pennsylvania is the "Key- stone" state. The photo I took of the empty track; for me it represents the void. But that's OK, what was there will be preserved. In all ways, Dwain was a train enthusiast. My interest in trains never matched Dwain's, but I did enjoy visiting his "empire." Dwain passed away the 4 of July this year at 93. 2
