11 b~ MPHS FCCLA Member Attends National Competition From July 7-12 I, Cady Lowery, and Mr. Waterkotte, my FCCLA Adviser, had the opportunity to attend the Family, Career and Community Lead- ers of America National Leadership Meeting in Orlando, Florida. This meeting was the natural progression of the work that I have put in this school year through competition in FCCLA. I had earned the right to go when I received a silver medal in the Chapter Service Project Manual STAR Event at the State FCCLA Conference in Springfield, Illinois back in April. Mr. Waterkotte and I made up part of the 7,000 FCCLA members and advisors that were in attendance for the conference at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort. The theme of the conference Was .#RealityCheck. This theme focused on teens and the use of social media sites in today's soci- ety - hence the hash tag symbol that is used on Twitter. Websites such as F.acebook and Twitter are changing the world just like the almost 200,000 FCCLA members are and there was a lot of focus put on using social media responsibly and for positive results. While there I was able to attend workshops and hear great keynote speakers. I was also able to pick up some ideas on fundraising and activi- ties the MPHS FCCLA could use. As part of .the conference, I was able .to meet people from all across the United States and especially from Illinois. Although the trip was mostly confer- ence related, we did have the chance to visit Walt Disney World with some of those other schools from Illinois. I finally got to see the Disney castle that I've wanted to see since I was introduced to the wofiderful world of Disney when I was about three years old. We were also able to go to Sea World, which is one of my favorite places to visit, and watch the Shamu show. On the Tuesday of the conference I competed in my event and had to ner- vously await the results until Thursday afternoon. Those results were post- poned even more as the awards ses- sion ran over time and Mr. Waterkotte and I had to leave before my name was called to catch our return flight. Luck- ily, a friend I had made during the con- ference stood in for me and received my medal. I received a silver medal rating and am so thankful for the opportunity to compete at this level. I am already making plans to compete again next year All in all the entire trip was a very good time. I was able to meet new people and have fun adventures at the theme parks. I'm so thankful to have the honor of being the first person from Mt. Pulaski to compete at the National FCCLA level. I'm also very thankful that Mr. Waterkotte was able to go with me and put up with my nonsense and that my parents, Doug and Teena, encouraged me go. I also want to thank the Mount Pulaski Booster Club as well as the many local residents and businesses who helped make this trip possible. Thank you for supporting me and FCCLA. I hope I have the privilege of attending next year's conference in Nashville, Ten- nessee along with several other mem- bers of Mount Pulaski FCCLA.
