Mitchell: Stop illegal immigrants from t~ D O k.a receiving state benefits In the wake of a critical state audit of the All Kids health insurance program, State Rep- resentative Bill Mitchell (R-For- syth) is moving to stop illegal immigrants from receiving state health care benefits. Illinois Auditor General Wil- liam Holland released the results of an audit of the All Kids program, which indicated that 75 percent of enrollees were undocumented immi- grants. The All Kids program, a remnant of disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich, pro- vides health care coverage for children, regardless of family income or immigration status. All Kids enrollees aren't eligi- ble for federal Medicaid funds, the entire cost of providing health insurance to illegal immigrants is paid for by Illi- nois taxpayers. "Illinois is drowning in a sea of red ink," Mitchell said. "We have a $13 billion deficit and owe our schools, health care p.roviders and social services $6 billion. Why in the world are we spending hundreds of mil- lions of dollars on health insur- ance for illegal immigrants? We've got to put a stop to this blatant misuse of taxpayer dol- lars." Over 1.5 million Illinois chil- dren are currently enrolled in All Kids. Although the State will not give out the exact number of illegal immigrant children in the program, Repre- sentative Mitchell believes 75 to 80 percent of All Kids enroll- ees are illegal immigrants. "This welfare handout to ille- gal immigrants is costing Illi- nois taxpayers over $500 mil- lion per year," said Mitchell. "I warned against this when All Kids.originally passed. I was one of 28 House members to vote against Blagojevich's All Kids scam. When we go back into session, I intend to file a budget amendment to strip out the funding and stop ille- gal immigrants from receiving taxpayer-funded health insur- ance." According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), there are more than 775,000 illegal immigrants living in Illinois. FAIR esti- mates that illegal immigrants cost Illinois taxpayers $3.5 bil- lion annually. This estimate is based on expenditures for edu- cation, health care and incar- ceration.
