7 City Issues Resolution Recognizing i Madison M. Haley i The following was read at the April 8 Pulaski City Mt. t Council meeting. Roger Bates, t o Commander of the Mt. Pulaski VFW Scroggin-Gee Post #777, represented Madison Haley - receiving the Resolution from Mayor Jim Fuhrer. City of Mt. Pulaski Official Resolution Resolution to Recognize Madison M. Haley Winner of the National 2013-2014 An- nual VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Contest and Winner of the State of Illinois 2013-2014 Annual VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Contest and WHEREAS: Madison M. Haley, a senior at Mt. Pulaski High School, and daughter of Jeff and Tricia Haley of Chestnut, Illinois, wrote an essay titled. "Why I'm Optimistic About Our Nation's Future" and submitted it to the local Mt Pulaski VFW Post #777 Voice of Democracy Scholarship contest: and 1947 by the VFW national headquarters to en- courage "high school students grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves concerning democratic ideas and principles"; and WHEREAS: Madison's essay used detailed imagery to compare the history of the. United States to a battleship, the U.S.S. America, which was built on principles established by the founding fathers. The essay continues the comparison with an optimistic view of the future and begins and ends with "in God We Trust"; and WHEREAS: Madison M. Haley was cho- sen the winner of the 67th Annual National VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Con- test in Washington D.C. at the annual national VFW Legislative Conference on March 3, 2014. She is the first state and national cham- pion from Mt. Pulaski since the contest was established in 1947.
