MPHS - FCCLA Attends State Meeting Seven members of the Mt. Pulaski High School chapter of FCCLA participated in the State Lead- ership Meeting held April 9 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center, President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, and Hilton Hotel in Springfield. Among the more than 1900 students and advisors who attended the two day conference were Kyley Wyss, Johanna Hebenstreit, Emily Oxby, Kyle Davis, Dillon -Huff, Andrea Hanna, and Sarah Clayton along with their advisor,.Bonnie Wachter. "During the, leadership conference, many mem- bers participated in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) and State Proficiency Events. These skill and proficiency events allow students to compete in an area of family and consumer sci- ences while gaining recognition for their experi- ence. Andrea designed and created a project for the FCCLA Project Runway contest. The project required participants to take used blue jeans and make a garment. She used old jeans to make a skirt with patchwork pieces of frayed denim. Although she didn't win first prize, Andrea learned a lot in the design and construction process. Students were also given the opportunity to par- ticipate in workshops and general sessions that addressed many of the key issues that are facing teens today. During the general sessions, keynote speaker Patrick Perez from Austin, TX challenged students to be their best. Students also had the opportunity to attend workshops on environmen- tal awareness, technology in the apparel indus- try, culinary creations, career investigation, self- defense, the art otasting foods, and more. The Mt. Pulaski chapter was awarded a silver certifi- cate for their projects throughout the year.
