LOCALS William I Downing, residing on route 121 between this city and Lincoln, was taken to the Decatur and Macon County hospital sever- al days ago, where he underwent a surgical operation. Word from his bedside this Thursday morn- ing was to the effect that he was in a critical condition. Mrs. Fred Roth entertained the Monday night 500 club at her home in the Bertoni Apartments Monday evening. The prizes were awarded to Mrs. Gene "Connolley and Mrs. O. E. Wagner. The club will not meet during Lent. Aldermn and Mrs. Clarence E. West derted last Thursday on an extensive auto trip, going first to Florida. On the homeward journey they will travel along the Atlantic coast on their way to Washington, D. C. They expect to be gone until the first part of Ap- ril. The Ladies Aid Society of the Christian church will meet at the home of Mrs. Otto Ey on North Marion street at 2:30 p. m. Thurs- day, Mach 6. Tl weather conditions since Thursday, Feb. 20, have been quite changeable. The tempera- ture at 6 a. m. both Friday and Saturday was about 10 degrees above, since which time it has not been quite so cold. Light snows fell both Monday afternoon and Wednesday niglt, with a temper- ature of 20 degrees above this Thursday morning. Dr. and [rs. Will A. swain, of Decatur, were callers in the city Tuesday.
