You had to be an athlete to serve as a Phoenix Volun- teer Fireman back in the day. The Mt. Pulaski Phoenix Fire Department was organized March 13, 1885. This year marks the 125 th Anniversary of the department. The department was a charter member of the Illinois Firemen's Association when it was formed January 8, 1889. The department received its State of Illinois Char- ter April 21, 1889. It was in 1873 that the first steps toward a fire depart- ment were taken. That year, Mt. Pulaski residents purchased six Babcock fire extinguishers. Filled with water, a volunteer strapped an extinguisher on his back and ran to a fire. These extinguishers were used until the Phoenix Fire Department was formed in 1885. In 1885, the City of Mt. Pulaski purchased a hand pulled ladder wagon, a hand pulled hose cart, and a 125th Anniversary of Phoenix Fire Department hand pulled pumper cart. These served the depart- ment for 32-years until in 1.917 when a Model T Ford Truck was purchased. All of this equipment is still pre- served. In the 1880s and 1890s the Phoenix Fire Department Volunteers participated in running competitions .with their hand pulled hose cart. The men won a gold medal on August 6, 1891 in a statewide running competition - with a time of 37-3/5 seconds. On September 1, 1892 they won in Ottawa-with a time of 36 seconds. On August 24, 1893 in Canton they won in a time of 35 2/5 seconds. Save on Homeowners Insurance! Insurance designed specifically for your home! The championship hose cart and gold medal are still in the possession of the volunteers. Sue Bobell Selenik provided the above photo of one of those winning races. In the photo is Fred Bobell. In his late 20s, he participated in all three of the win- ning competitions. The occupations of the other Phoe- nix Volunteer Firemen is not known, but during this time period - Fred Bobell was a coal miner at the Mt. Pulaski Coal Mine. One of his pay slips from 1893 (when he was 29) stated he worked eight days at 25-cents a day; and mined 36 tons of coal at 50-cents per ton. All done with a pick and shovel. That accounts for his athletic ability. He died in 1927 at the age of 63. I i , ,< f00UiT-O-UT i I ' Watermain. Flushing. I. I Program I The Mt.
