mim illlIillli illllliliiil .= oO w = = a 0 I to The Hole Two guys are hunting. They come upon a huge hole in the ground. They approach it ahd are amazed by the size of it. The first hunter says" Wow, 'at's some hole, I can't even see the bottom, I wonder how deep it is?" The second hunter says" I don't know, let's throw something down and listen and see how long it takes to hit bottom." The first hunter says" There's this old transmission here, give me a hand and we'll throw it in and see." So they pick it up and carry it over, and count one, and two, and three, and throw it in the hole. They are standing there listening and looking over the edge and they hear a rustling in the brush behind them. As they turn around they see a goat come crashing through the brush, run up to the hole, and with no hesitation, jump in head first. While they are standing there looking at each other, looking in the hole, and trying to figure out what that was all about, an old farmer walks up.. "Didn't. happen to see my goat round here, did ya?" The first hunter says" We sure nuff did. We was just a standin here a minute ago and yer goat come running out of them bushes over yonder doin' bout a hunert miles an hour and he jumped head first into this here hole!" And the old farmer said, "That ain't possible. I had him chained to a trans- mission: A lesson from Socrates In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his iSd(m. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance, who ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students...?" "Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me, r'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Test of Three." "Test of Three?" "That's correct," Socrates continued. "Befof:e you talk to me about my stu- dent let's take a moment to test what you'regoing to say. The first test is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?" "No," the man replied, "actually I just heard about it." "All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second test, the test of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student sometlling good?" "No, on the contrary..." "So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him even though you're not certain it's true?" The man shrugged, a little embar- rassed. Socrates continued, "You may still pass though because there is a third test - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?" "No, not really..." "Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?" The man was defeated and ashamed and said no more. This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem. It also explains why Socrates never found out that Plato was cam y!ng on with his wife. Mt.
